Chelsie Cameron is a second year Fine Art student at the University of East London. For Chelsie, art is all about faces! Portraiture is Chelsie’s game and we sat down with her to speak to her about her work.
Chelsie explained to us how her style has changed over the years. “I used to practice printmaking and that definitely inspired my paintings with the simple bold style.” Chelsie explained that when she came to University, she was posed the question of realism and it’s originality and how she could make it her own.
Often, painters can dabble in both landscapes and portraiture, sometimes even venturing into modern styles. But Chelsie explained to us that she never had much interest in landscapes. “I don’t really feel a connection with landscapes I just like to have people in my paintings”
Chelsie also takes inspiration from her previous studies of psychology and her study of the human mind when choosing her subjects. “I’m really interested in psychology and I study psychology for about three years. And I like to paint people who I relate too because it just resonates to me I guess.”
But it is not just her previous studies that inspire Chelsie, she also spoke about how important her current studies and coursemates were for her inspiration and artistic method. "I look a lot of other people’s work and a lot of my classmate and they give me feedback. They do different style from me."
Chelsie has no shame in standing out and she wants her artwork to do the same. “I think I am trying to represent the emotions and experiences I have from being different and a bit of an outsider. I am trying to show my confidence of being someone who dresses differently and gets stared at when they are walking around. I am trying to show someone who doesn’t care about those things in my work.”
